Baiju Bhatt est un violoniste, compositeur et éducateur Indo-Suisse, leader du groupe jazz/world Red Sun. Il découvre le violon à l’âge de six ans, et accomplit jusqu’à ses 20 ans des études de musique classique au Conservatoire de Lausanne. Féru d’horizons musicaux variés, il se spécialise dans le jazz et les musiques du monde, et obtient avec un prix d’excellence son Master (Jazz) à la Haute École de Musique de Lausanne en 2014.
Établi à Paris afin de susciter des échanges entre sa Romandie natale et la capitale du swing manouche, il tourne depuis dans le monde entier avec son projet original Red Sun (dont le dernier album, People Of Tomorrow, est estampillé « Indispensable » Jazz News et « HIT » Couleurs Jazz), les virtuoses frères tunisiens Amine & Hamza Mraihi – The Band Beyond Borders, le trio ZAMAKAN, dans un contexte de jazz manouche (Gypsy Jazz Sessions, Dario Napoli, etc) ou en tant qu’artiste invité.
Baiju est aussi enseignant au Conservatoire de Lausanne, où il dirige notamment l’ensemble à succès des Ministrings, ainsi qu’à la Compagnie Albertine (CH), et il intervient comme formateur spécialisé dans l’improvisation et le jazz dans des cadres très variés (Centre des Musiques Didier Lockwood de Paris, Schweizerischer Jugendmusikwettbewerb, Académie Tibor Varga, Under The Tuscan Sun, École de Musique de Lausanne, parmi bien d’autres).
Il fonde en 2018 le Creative Strings Workshop – Europe avec le violoniste américain Christian Howes, et le Festival du même nom, rassemblement international autour de l’improvisation pour instrumentistes à cordes, dont il assure actuellement la direction artistique.
Baiju est élu « Violoniste étranger de l’année » par Jazz Magazine en 2022.
Baiju Bhatt is a Swiss-Indian violin, composer, educator, and leader of the award-winning jazz/world quintet Red Sun. Baiju (1988) picked up the violin at the age of six, and studied Western classical music at the Lausanne Conservatory (Switzerland) until his early twenties.
He discovered jazz by playing piano as a kid, and soon started to play swing and other forms of jazz with his violin. He later studied with jazz violinist Pierre Blanchard, and joined in 2009 the professional course at the Conservatory (HEMU) in Lausanne, thus becoming the first violinist to ever complete a Master’s degree in Jazz in Switzerland.
Always eager to discover new musical horizons, Baiju Bhatt has also studied with famous jazz violinists such as Didier Lockwood and Jean Luc Ponty, and with Indian, Celtic, Eastern European and Middle-Eastern musicians. In addition to his concerts with Gypsy swing bands in Switzerland and Paris, Baiju Bhatt has toured the world since 2010 with the virtuoso Tunisian brothers Amine & Hamza – The Band Beyond Borders, acoustic trio ZAMAKAN, as a featured artist, and with his most recent project, Red Sun. He currently lives between Switzerland and Paris, and teaches at the Lausanne Conservatory as well as in the Compagnie Albertine (CH).
Baiju, alongside jazz violin superstar Christian Howes, is the founder of the Creative Strings Workshop and Festival in Switzerland. He joined Paris-based agency Nuances in 2020, and his third album as a leader of Red Sun, « People Of Tomorrow » (« Indispensable » Jazz News, « HIT » Couleurs Jazz), was released in 2023 on German label Neuklang.
Baiju was elected « Violinist of the year » by Jazz Magazine in 2022.
